My New Years Resolutions for 2015

It's 2015. Can you believe it?! As I reflect on the fact that another year has passed by, I also just realized that I have never actually made any New Years Resolutions...at least not publicly, but this year thats about to change. With 2015 quickly approaching, I've decided to make some resolutions and share them with you all...and just maybe I'll inspire someone out there to create their own.

Here are my top 5 New Years Resolutions for 2015...

1. To Have more Fun! And to bring that fun into my jewelry business. I first started making jewelry just because it was fun. And yet now that I make and sell it professionally its so easy to lose sight of the fact that its supposed to be fun...what with spreadsheets, analyzing stats, keeping inventory, adding up receipts, interacting with vendors and customers, and doing various accounting work. But when I'm designing and making, thats when I'm having the most fun. And I've decided to have more fun in my business. Whether its in the creation of new designs, or using brighter colors, I'm looking forward to bringing more fun into my business.

2. Relax and Recharge. I'm looking forward to scheduling more time off into my schedule. Believe it or not I work everyday. Even on the days when I'm not making jewelry or running to the post office I'm usually answering emails or doing some sort of administrative work. Its easy to work everyday especially when you love your job but I know that taking more days off will actually refuel me and recharge my creativity which I know I can bring right back into my work.

3. Get organized! Confession time: During tax season I usually compile all of my receipts together last minute and try to figure out everything at the eleventh hour....usually just a day or two before my appointment with my accountant. In the past I have often ordered more materials and supplies than I have need at a time and been stuck with more inventory than I can use for months on end, all because I wasn't as organized as I could have been. I could be way more organized! So I'm committing this year to using my plastic bins better and to organizing my paperwork better. I'm hoping to find the perfect file organizer very soon!

4. Less is more. I currently offer more than 200 items in my etsy shop and thats A LOT of different materials and gemstones to keep in stock. Over the past few years I have come to realize that when you offer too many things for sale at one time and make it available to a variety of different people, its easy to feel scattered as a brand, trull work to improve on the collection you currently have, and its hard for people to distinguish you from every other jewelry designer out there. So, as a result I've decided to cut down on the amount of products I offer and the varieties available of those products as well. This will also help me to focus and cater more to my current customers needs. I'm also looking forward to the effect this will have on my brand in the long run.

5. Expand my creativity. I know, I just said "less is more" in the last paragraph! (smile) But here's what I mean by expanding... Did you know I love to cook? Yes, I absolutely love cooking and baking,  and even coming up with new drink recipes. I love decorating my cupcakes and cookies as ornately as I do my jewelry. I even considered attending culinary school after graduating with a BFA from art school but ultimately decided against it when a few of my friends told stories of how difficult a time they were having in finding jobs in the industry. But that doesn't stop me from trying new recipes and cooking for myself and my friends at home. Last year I tried lots of new things, even experimenting with cooking on the grill for the first time and I'm definitely looking forward to branching out more with new recipes and other forms of creative expression. In fact, I recently bought a few canvases after a 15 year break from painting and can't wait to see what I create.

I'm curious...are you making New years Resolutions? Have any tips that you would like to share to help me get more organized? Want to share your New Years Resolutions with me? I would love to know, whether you have a business or not...so please do share in the comments below! :)

Happy 2015 Everyone!!

p.s. stay tuned, I'm writing about what I'm most excited about in 2015 in my next post!

Christmas Themed Jewelry

Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year... maybe its the giving and receiving of gifts OR the fact that people are generally happy for no reason. You gotta love a holiday that brings people together from pretty much all cultural backgrounds and makes them celebrate and party. And then there's the mulled cider, candy canes, brightly colored sugar cookies...yummmmm....

And with Christmas less than 2 weeks away, I've highlighted a few Holiday Themed pieces in my shop to help you celebrate in style or do some last minute stylish online shopping.

So lets get on to the gems...

This Crystal Quartz and Pearl Holiday Charm Bracelet. This has a "classic charm bracelet" feel with charms including silver bells, holly, a snowflake and a candy cane, all in sterling silver with sparkly Swarovski Crystals and cream colored freshwater pearls.

Colorful Chandelier Pearl Earrings - made from colorful pearls in a variety of sizes, these earrings add class and a pop of color to your outfit.

Christmas Lights Charm Bracelet. Classic Christmas colors- red, green and white pearls represent christmas lights. This chunky sterling silver bracelet also has a candy cane charm, a holly charm and a highly detailed reindeer charm.

Pair it with my classic off white pearl earrings...

Or with these wine colored freshwater pearl cluster earrings...

These very Green Sparkly Earrings remind me of the intense green of the christmas tree. Made of various shades of green super sparkly swarovski crystals.

5 Reasons to Shop Online Right Now for Black Friday 2014

Now that I live on the west coast and its practically 70 degrees all year long, I often lose track of the time of year and it doesn't really seem like the Holidays are around the corner. But, here they are yet again and Thanksgiving is (eeps) tomorrow!

If you are someone who likes to get ahead of the shopping curve and catch a good sale, but you don't want to participate in the Black Friday craziness, then, keep reading because here are my top 5 reasons to start shopping online RIGHT NOW instead of actually on Black Friday this year.

1. Avoid Lines by shopping online. If you're anything like me, you abhor crowds and craziness and lines that are more than 2 people long. I have even left a store once or twice because the lines were just too long and not enough cashiers were staffed at the checkout counters for the holiday season to help me and the 10,000 other customers online.

2. $ave money beyond just $ale prices. Shopping trips can be costly beyond just the items you're paying for. There's money spent on lost time traveling, gas money to get there or other travel expenses, impromptu purchases on items besides the ones you were planning to buy and extra money spent on fast food and dining out while you're out and about shopping. Also, lately at the checkout counter I have noticed a HUGE increase in the amount of retailers asking me to "round up" my purchase to be donated to xyz charity that the store is affiliated with. All that sales pressure while I'm just trying to quickly pay for my item and leave just feels plain icky to me.

3. Sales are on NOW. In fact some retailers started their sales last week. Even though Cyber Monday is reserved for online sales, many online retailers and small business owners (like myself) have already started their online sales to give their customers plenty of time to avoid the Holiday rush! And if you have a popular size like I do (medium top and 8.5 in shoes) then that top you've been coveting may be sold out by Friday. So go ahead and shop and get that item... like, now!

4. Hundreds of categories all on one website. Literally hundreds of deals are already available on all sorts of different products from a variety of retailers on sites like amazon.com and ebay.com. One of my personal favorite deals is that Amazon Wine is featuring deep discounts starting at 60% off on over 100 unique wines.

5. Convenience. When I lived in NYC, I did not have a car and shopping beyond my neighborhood for large bulky items and figuring out how to get them home was always a challenge. Living in the city, trying to avoid crowds on the subways was hard work and it wasn't always easy to hale a cab from Manhattan to Brooklyn.  But even if you do have a car, you may have to worry about parking or other transportation issues. Shopping online means those same large items are delivered (hassle free) right to your door and if you need it within a day or two, you can always spend a little more for upgraded shipping. Its definitely worth the extra spent on upgraded shipping since you'll likely save time, and aggravation.

So, get online and go shopping! :)

Thats it! I hope you enjoyed my personal top 5 reasons to shop online right now for Black Friday!
And I'm having an early online Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale as well. You can save 15% off everything in my shop from now until the end of Monday by entering code: THANKS at checkout.

Happy (Online) Shopping!

Aziza Jewelry on Instagram. Spread the Love!

Did you know I'm on Instagram? I havent promoted my new "I'm all over on Instagram status" very well these days but I've actually joined a few years ago, and kinda just recently (over the past 8 months or so) became really active...

But...thanks to a reminder from a few of my lovely Instagram/Facebook friends I've been posting pretty often and having lots of fun with it. Since I have an online business but no brick and mortar store I don't get to see too many of customers wearing my jewelry in person, so I've decided to ask my beloved blog readers to tag me on Instagram! Why, you ask??

Simply because I'd love to see a pic of you wearing my jewelry. And if its ok with you, I'll post on my own page and show off my creations to the world...and give you a shout out as well! Just tag me... @azizajewelry and I'd love to give you a shout out right back... it would just be super cool to see what my beautiful customers actually look like wearing their Aziza Jewelry!

See you on Instagram!

How to Clean Sterling Silver Jewelry

My customers always ask if Sterling Silver Jewelry will eventually tarnish over time and the answer is yes! And since I get this question so often, I thought I would share with you a few tips on just how I clean my own personal sterling silver jewelry.

Actually, all jewelry tarnishes eventually. Gold, brass, copper, and even fine silver or 100% pure silver will eventually tarnish over time. In fact the only metal that doesn't tarnish is metal which is coated with a thin layer of some type of coating protecting its outer layer from attracting oil or dirt to stick to it (which is actually one of the main factors which causes tarnishing)

So, lets get right to it- here are a few basic and easy tips on how to clean sterling silver and also on how to prevent it from tarnishing in the first place, because prevention is the main step in keeping jewelry clean and sparkling for years to come! :)

1. Do not wear your jewelry all the time.
Unless its a wedding ring, I do not recommend wearing any one piece of jewelry day and night. Natural body oil, sweat, and jewelry rubbing against skin and other objects from the outside world will quickly break down the composition of any metal, especially soft metal like sterling silver and if its fine jewelry, such as a ring with a stone setting, daily wear and tear can actually loosen stone settings and eventually breakdown the metal that much quicker.

2. Keep your jewelry dry as much as possible.
I highly recommend that you do not wear your jewelry in the shower or pool or in any wet environment.  Wearing jewelry in the shower or pool or while working out is a bad idea for several reasons. Shower water (at least here in the US) has so many added chemicals like fluoride, chlorine and other chemicals which will quickly contribute to the break down of the composition of sterling silver or any metal.
Pro tip: Speaking of fluoride, never use toothpaste with fluoride to clean jewelry. The fluoride from toothpaste will actually damage the metal and toothbrushes tend to actually scratch the surface of metal leaving fine grooves for dirt to seep into.

3.When not in use, store it away!
Keep your dry, clean jewelry in an airtight protective plastic bag, preferably with a ziploc style closure. Storing your jewelry in an air tight protective plastic bag is best as this will provide ample protection against airborne elements like carbon, dust, dirt, skin, dander, and other elements which create tarnish. Without storing your jewelry away, these elements will eventually be attracted to your jewelry and stick to it causing a layer of film or dirt which will tarnish your jewelry.

4. When it does eventually tarnish, here are a few tips on how to clean and polish it!
I recommend polishing jewelry with a polishing cloth specifically made for sterling silver jewelry. That will remove the tarnish and then polish the piece of jewelry back to its original luster. In  my shop I carry polishing cloths specifically made for silver here.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/75274729/polishing-cloth-for-your-sterling-silver

If the jewelry is fine or has small crevices which may be too delicate to polish with a cloth, you can soak your jewelry in a gentle solution of 1 part gentle liquid dish detergent with 5 parts lukewarm water. Let your jewelry soak for 20 minutes or longer until the tarnish starts to loosen and disappear. Then rinse with cold water and if necessary use a q-tip to gently polish any hard to reach crevices.
*Never use a toothbrush because sterling silver is a soft metal and this will actually scratch the surface of sterling silver.
*Never soak jewelry which was assembled with glue or epoxy as the glue may dissolve.

On the left is a necklace with tarnish and on the right is one that has been cleaned in a dish detergent solution.

Storing your sterling silver jewelry in these protective polybags once they are clean and dry is another great way to keep it clean, tarnish free and shiny when not in use.

Prevention is best, but with these basic steps, you should be able to enjoy your sterling silver jewelry for years to come. Happy Cleaning!

Have any tips of your own on how you clean your sterling silver jewelry? I would love to hear your tips in the comments below.

Happy 2014!

Happy New Year!

Wow! Wer'e already in 2014! I had a really relaxing Christmas Vacation, New years Eve and New Years Day and now I'm back to work with lots of new pieces in my shop already.

I'm so excited for a New Year and New Beginnings and have already begun preparing for a busy year ahead. One of the items I am so excited to announce is my 2014 necklace. Last year I got so much great feedback about my 2013 necklace that I just had to make a 2014 necklace to help bring in the New Year.

In addition, due to popular demand, I am now making pieces in 14k rose gold fill and in combination of gold and silver together in one necklace.

2014 necklace in 14k rose gold fill with sterling silver chain

2014 necklace in yellow 14k gold fill
I think it would make a onderful gift for someone who will be graduating in 2014 or for someone who this year holds special meaning for, like an expectant mother or a numerology lover.

Thats all for now, Happy 2014 everyone!
